Folsom Historical Society’s 4th Annual History Bee
Rules and Play Guidelines

This contest is for K-12 students living in Folsom / Sacramento / Western El Dorado County area. Teachers and other adults are encouraged to take the Bee as a fun challenge, but will not be eligible for prizes.

There will be three, 10 question, online test modules. Questions will be presented in a random order and not every participant will view the same questions.

 Each module will get progressively harder and correct answers will be worth more points in each successive module.

Each participant can only take each test 1 time. Participants should study the material thoroughly before beginning.
The Bee will be conducted online. Test scores will be graded on a curve by the following grade-level groups: K-4, 5-6, 7-9, and 10-12. 

Prizes 
There will be cash and other prizes for the winning kids. Can you donate a prize the kids will like? If so, please email us with the information.

Attention Parents
If you have children under 13 who wish to take the History Bee online, we suggest you go to the be site NOW, print the COPPA permission form and fax it to us immediately. Data then has to be entered manually, so allow approximately 1 week for us to process the form before trying to log your child in to start their first module.
 

 

Here's where the answers are located so you and your kids can "Bee" prepared: 
  • 100% of the answers will be found in The Golden Corridor book in Chapter 5, Sacramento and Chapter 6, Folsom.
  • Participants should study ALL material relating to those chapters including: photo captions, side bar text, the actual photos, and the bibliographic information that relates to the references in those chapters.
  • Two books are available to any participating school upon request. You can obtain them by contacting Kathy Colivas at the district office at kcolivas@fcusd.org  We encourage parents to purchase additional books for their children to study at home, or to donate to their kid’s classroom for more in-depth study. 

Timeline
Teachers
Teachers are encouraged to take the Bee PRIOR to allowing your kids to do so. That way you'll know what to prepare your kids for, and have some fun testing your own knowledge. If you find any problems with the Bee please contact us immediately so they can be corrected before the kids start testing. 

Children
Children will be able to take the online portions of the History Bee from February 1 through March 31. Winners will be announced near the end of April and a date for an awards ceremony will be scheduled at that time.

Parents & Other Adults
Adults are welcome to take the Bee anytime. It'll be a fun test of your area knowledge and you'll get a better idea of what your children are learning. But, prizes are only available to K-12 kids. 

 

 

April 20   8am- 4pm   Sutter Street Antique Faire Explore the variety of dealers and collectors up and down Sutter Street.
Music, food and entertainment are part of the fun.  The Museum offers some very unique finds of donated items.  Come early and shop!   

April 26- July 14 -- "Play Ball: A History of the Giants"  Baseball is back at the Folsom History Museum. This spring we offer a look at the history of the San Francisco Giants. This private collection will feature gloves, uniforms, programs from the San Francisco Giants glory years. Call the Museum about special events planned during the exhibit. (916) 985-2707

April 26   3pm- 9pm   Fiddlers Jam  -- For lovers of Bluegrass, the Interpretive Area is hosting a BLUEGRASS JAM. Members and friends of the California Bluegrass Association, Sacramento Chapter will bring their banjos, fiddles and fun to this toe tapping event.This is not a performance but an ongoing, multiple jam session.  Any level of player is welcome just bring your interest and the appropriate acoustic bluegrass instrument Families should come to hear great music and stay for
dinner at a restaurant in the Historic District.  Small admission charge.

May 17  11am – 2pm  Sports Card Evaluation Day Bring the vintage Willie Mays baseball card you have had  as a kid and find out what it is worth. In honor of our baseball exhibit we are offer a one day evaluation of all sports related cards by a qualified expert appraiser.  Evaluation cost $5.00 per person.  

June 7  12- 2  Book Signing Alan O’Connor local expert on the history of the Solon will be on hand to talk and sign his recently published book: Gold on the Diamond This event is free but there is a charge for the Museum exhibit on baseball.

June 18th -- Pony Express Re Ride Before e-mail there was regular mail or snail mail as we call it today. However from 1860- 1861, regular mail was transported from Saint Joseph Mo to California by a Pony Express Rider. This historic journey is recaptured in June and the Folsom History Museum, which is located on the site of the original Pony Express Depot is a stop on the ride. July 2 - NOON -- Cattle Drive -  This amazing event is the kick off to the annual Rodeo. Members of the Rodeo, Equestrian Ladies, and Colorful Characters will proceed the storming of the Longhorn cattle. Museum and event are free.

Ongoing Docent Training

October - June Museum Tours and Outreach Programs 
Book a tour or outreach program today. The Museum offers a wonderful educational docent led tours. Tours can include other historic sites as well as the museum. The Museum Education Outreach program comes to your school. The schedule is flexible. There is a small fee for these programs. Call the Museum to schedule today!
